Amsterdam 

The Netherlands’ government is headquartered in The Hague, but Amsterdam is the country’s capital and largest city.  

921 402 people live there in the city proper, 1,457 018 people live  there in the urban area, and 2,480 394 people live there in the  metropolitan area.  

Because of its extensive network of canals, which are now recognized as  a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Amsterdam, a city in the Dutch province  of North Holland.

The city of Amsterdam was established at the mouth of the Amstel River,  which had been dammed to prevent flooding; the name of the city is a  regional dialect of the word dam.  

The UNESCO World Heritage List includes both Amsterdam’s canals and its Defense Line from the 19th and 20th centuries. 

Dutch art and history are the focus of the Rijksmuseum, the country’s national museum, which is situated in it.

The collection of paintings and drawings by Vincent van Gogh at the  museum is the world’s largest. The museum received 2.3 million visitors  in 2017 .

The Anne Frank House, also known as the Anne Frank Huis in Dutch, is a  museum and writer’s residence devoted to Jewish wartime diarist Anne  Frank .

One of the three Dutch palaces that the monarch may use at his or her  discretion under an Act of Parliament is the Royal Palace of Amsterdam  in it .
