The Kerala Story
An upcoming Hindi-language movie from India, The Kerala Story, is being produced and directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. A group of Keralan women who convert to Islam and join the extremist Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) are the focus of the plot. The movie has drawn criticism for presenting itself as a true story and for falsely alleging that thousands of women from Kerala are being converted to Islam and recruited by ISIS. It is also accused of advancing the Sangh Parivar’s agenda.
Yogita Bihani, Adah Sharma, Sonia Balani, and Siddhi Idnani are the movie’s leading ladies. It will be available on May 5, 2023, as planned.
Premise and factual accuracy
The movie’s captions claim that it is based on a true story, but there is no solid evidence to support the accuracy of the statistics presented.
Adah Sharma played the part of Fathima Ba, a Hindu Malayali nurse who had converted to Islam and joined the ISIS before winding up in an Afghan prison, in the teaser, which was released on November 3, 2022. She claims to be one of the 32,000 missing Hindu and Christian girls from Kerala who have been recruited by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) after converting to Islam. The claimed figures are largely false because they are extrapolated from incorrect representations of unrelated statistics and based on misinterpretations, misquotes, and mistranslations.
In a 2019 report, the Observer Research Foundation notes that between 2014 and 2018, 60 to 70 people from Kerala joined ISIS. [8] The Indian government reported that not more than 100 to 200 Indians had joined the organization overall over the years, one of the lowest numbers of any nation with a sizable Muslim population. There were 66 people from India who were affiliated with ISIS at the time, according to the US Department of State’s 2020 report on terrorism.
Four women from Kerala who converted to Islam and traveled to Afghanistan with their husbands to join ISIS between 2016 and 2018 appear to be the inspiration for the events depicted in the movie. They were among a group of 21 people from Kerala who joined ISIS in 2016, and they are still detained there after turning themselves in in 2019.
Opposition
The only two political parties to have held power in the state since Independence, the Indian National Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), both objected to the film’s release because it spreads false information among different ethnic groups. Furthermore, they claim that the filmmakers are advancing the Sangh Parivar’s agenda of maligning Kerala and promoting the “love jihad” hoax, which is a Hindutva conspiracy theory.

The film’s producer, Shah, responded to the accusations by stating that “nothing we say will be without evidence” and that Sen had spent four years researching the story.
Anil Kant, the state police chief of Kerala, instructed the Thiruvananthapuram City Police to open an investigation based on a report from the hi-tech crime inquiry cell of the Kerala Police after a journalist based in Tamil Nadu complained to the Kerala chief minister that false propaganda was being spread against Kerala and that communal harmony was being destroyed. Kant, however, asserted that no FIR had yet been filed because of advice from legal counsel. An investigation is currently being conducted on the movie.
